MANCHESTER — The students of Manchester Elementary Middle School took on the fairy tale turned upside down of "Once Upon A Mattress" this past week, turning their gymnasium into a faraway kingdom where the course of true love has some odd challenges thrown in its way.
The musical, with songs by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer, and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer, is a send-up of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale "The Princess and the Pea." It's full of memorable songs and quick-witted banter, and the students' singing and acting were spot-on in a performance Wednesday for the student body.
While MEMS music teacher Fran Marino directed the musical, the production was student-run, including the lighting, sound, makeup and programs.
Two more performances were scheduled for Thursday at MEMS.
