Letter: Rod and Gun Club appreciates support

To the Editor,Thank you to the community of Manchester for approving Article 10 and continuing the great relationship between the Town and the Manchester Rod and Gun Club on Saturday, March 4. As the club President, I apologize that I did not get a chance to express my thoughts to you on Saturday. We were pleased that the voters supported the club once again. For members of the community who are not familiar with the background, the club has a history that stretches back 95 years. Since around 1922 the club has been providing outdoor sportsman an opportunity to meet and learn from one another. The club made a major decision in the early 1970's to sell off land around the clubhouse. As one long-standing member said, he recalled the most memorable thing about the sale being all the real estate agents and developers looking to buy the land and turn it into home lots. As we now know, the club members voted to offer the Town the land at a below market value price and the Dana Thompson Memorial Rec Park was created there. For many of us, the club provides an opportunity to enjoy the outdoor life of Vermont and to do good work. Clubs like ours provide a valuable service to our vibrant community and the membership volunteers for many fundraising and charitable events. Our latest was the Southern Vermont Primitive Biathlon held a few weekends ago and has participants traveling from all over the Northeast and beyond to participate in our extraordinary event. It's been said this event is like a snapshot of our history. Our fundraising from that event supports the youth scholarship program sending young people to the Green Mountain Conservation Camp. This camp "offers hands-on learning experiences about fish, wildlife, ecology, botany, forestry, hunter firearm safety, outdoor first aid, and so much more." (From GMCC website)We also provide low-cost options for local civic groups to gather and network by providing access to clubs like the local senior groups and the Boy Scouts, for example. So, your support to offer our club a property tax exemption will be helpful to many local groups and continues the longtime relationship between the Town of Manchester and the Manchester Rod and Gun Club.Thank you for your support.Harry LuxManchester
