Disc Golf finds home at Magic Mountain
"It's a fast growing sport and uses our beautiful natural terrain and ski trails," said Geoff Hatheway, President of SKI MAGIC LLC. "It is a sport that allows people to explore our mountain and anyone can play it."
The Disc Golf currently has nine holes with the back-nine being added next year. While it has only been around for a weekend, people are enjoying the course.
"Everyone is loving the course," Hatheway said. "It is a challenging course, but they're already excited for us to add the back nine."
The course costs $5 to play and $5 if a participant is looking to rent discs. Different discs can be compared to golf clubs, including drivers, putters, and wedges to help with distance or how much you may want a disc to curve. The course is currently open Thursday through Sunday
from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The course will also be a part of Magic Mountain's upcoming first-ever Golf Biathlon. In partnership with Tater Hill Golf Club in Windham, two-person teams will play a tournament that includes nine holes of regular golf followed by nine holes of disc golf.
"We wanted to take the two sports and do something unique," Hatheway said. "Participants don't necessarily have to be good at either sport. We thought it would be an interesting way to develop a tournament to cross-play the two sports. We want people to come out and have fun with it."
The tournament is open to all with advanced registration at $100 per player. Up to 72 golfers can compete in the tournament which will take place on September 1. A portion of the proceeds goes to benefit the University of Vermont's Children's Hospital. The tournament also includes prizes and a dinner with an after party at Magic Mountain's Black Line Tavern.
The after party will also include competitions for longest disc throw, closest to the line, and a disc putting contest to raise funds for the the Children's Hospital. You do not need to take part in the tournament to play in the competitions. For more information or to register your two-person team, head to www.magicmtn.com/disc-golf.
